Job Duties

The Director Pupil Transportation is responsible for providing oversight for school district provision of pupil transportation services to resident pupils attending public and nonpublic schools in New York State.  The Pupil Transportation Director oversees the administration and implementation of programs and policies related to New York State Pupil Transportation and serves as a liaison between the program and internal and external entities.  The incumbent drafts safety and operational regulations and guidance for pupil transportation services and represents the Department on various inter-agency state task forces related to pupil safety.  This position is only found in the State Education Department.

Responsible for administration, oversight and implementation of programs and policies related to New York State Pupil Transportation.

Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Educational Aid Services:

• Assist in drafting safety and operational regulations and guidance for pupil transportation services.

• Represent the State Education Department on various inter-agency state task forces related to pupil transportation and safety.

• Oversee the Commissioners School Bus Driver Instructor Advisory Committee.

• Develop Requests for Proposals for School Bus Safety curriculum and the School Bus Safety database.

• Administer and coordinate activities, including allocating, monitoring and tracking funds or expenditures in relation to New York State pupil transportation.

• Encourage efficient management of transportation programs.

• Ensure compliance with various laws, rules, regulations, and other requirements on pupil safety, vendor contracts, route design, etc.

• Evaluate the effectiveness of programs, including performing independent audits of transportation records to determine compliance with state regulations and efficiency of operations.

• Developing, analyzing, and reconciling data; preparing recommendations and reports on pupil transportation.

• Assisting school district transportation supervisors with legal and policy issues surrounding pupil transportation.

• Assisting law enforcement and other interested entities with pupil safety information, accident information and other matters.

• Respond to inquiries from parents and other citizens regarding pupil transportation and child safety.
