HISTORIAN, in general, performs historical research and writes for publication concerning the history of the Colony and State of New York. Typical projects include composition of basic reference works such as an encyclopedia of historical terms and basic information; a geographic dictionary of information concerning the localities of the State including historical, industrial and descriptive material; guides to the location and description of rare manuscripts and other materials of historical importance; histories of various industries; histories of State agencies. Associated and recurring duties include examining historical source material to determine its significance and validity; gathering, organizing, and publishing information concerning collections of historical materiel; examining source materials and making recommendations for their preservation; authenticating inscriptions for historical monuments and markers.
The level of the titles within this career ladder vary based on the level of supervision, complexity of the duties involved, degree of independent judgment, etc.
