Job Duties

As an Area Office Director, you would manage a major program or group of programs in a regional office, and perform administrative responsibilities in support of those programs. You would supervise staff; coordinate, plan, and evaluate program activities and goals; plan, staff, and direct surveys and investigative activities of health care providers; teach surveillance techniques; evaluate materials and reports prepared by staff; develop effective working relationships with health care providers; make decisions concerning providers’ compliance with State and federal laws, rules, and regulations; and coordinate surveillance investigations for enforcement proceedings, including serving as an expert witness at such proceedings.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Health and have had permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:

Either 1. three months as an Associate Medical Care Administrator, Consultant Nurse (Community Nursing & Home Health Services), Consultant Nurse (Hospital Nursing Services Administration), Director of Adult Residential Care Regional Operations 1, Health Systems Specialist 4, Health Systems Specialist 4 (Developmental Disabilities), Hospital Administrator Consultant, Intermediate Care Facility/Mental Retardation Survey Coordinator, Investigative Specialist 3
(Professional Conduct), Principal Ambulatory Care Program Analyst, Principal Medical Conduct Investigator, Specialist in Adult Services 3, or Specialist in Adult Services 3 (Social Services);

Or

2. one year as an Associate Ambulatory Care Analyst, Associate Emergency Medical Care Representative, Community Nursing Services Consultant (Home Health Services), Health Systems Specialist 3, Health Systems Specialist 3 (Emergency Medical Care), Hospital Nursing Services Consultant, Investigative Specialist 2 (Professional Conduct), Pharmacy Consultant, Principal Sanitarian, Regional Medical Care Administrator, Senior Nutrition Services Consultant,
Senior Public Health Social Work Consultant, Specialist in Adult Services 2, Specialist in Adult Services 2 (Social Services), Standards Compliance Analyst 2, or Supervising Medical Conduct Investigator.
