Summary of Job Description

Employment Counselors provide vocational counseling and career development information to individuals looking for employment. They provide basic job search skills; assess transferable skills; assist in vocational planning; provide job development training and other referrals; counsel individuals and groups with barriers to employment; and provide follow-up services as needed. They also promote Department of Labor (DOL) services to the community and other interested parties.

Employment Counselors provide vocational counseling, career development knowledge and testing services for individuals and groups with a wide range of capabilities; and assists in finding employment opportunities for employed, unemployed and underemployed individuals.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

There will be no written test. The test will consist of an evaluation of your education and experience. When you apply, you must provide complete information to show that you meet the minimum qualifications.

Candidates must have:

Either 1: a master's degree or higher including or supplemented by 15 graduate credit hours in counseling, social work, psychology, education, or career development with a total of 6 graduate credit hours in TWO of the following areas:
Counseling Theory and Practice
Group Counseling/Group Dynamics
Lifestyle and Career Development
Statistics or Test & Measurements

Or 2: a bachelor's degree supplemented by 30 graduate credit hours, 15 of which must be in counseling, social work, psychology, education, or career development with a total of 6 graduate credit hours in TWO of the following areas:
Counseling Theory and Practice
Group Counseling/Group Dynamics
Lifestyle and Career Development
Statistics or Test & Measurements

AND one year of (full time equivalent) experience in counseling which MUST include all of the following:

establishment of a one-to-one employment counseling relationship, including gathering customer information and relating it to the labor market;
the selection and utilization of standardized testing instruments; and
the development and implementation of customer employment plans.
