Job Duties

As a Body Repair Inspector (Chinese Language), you would review and resolve consumer complaints primarily involving body repair services and inspect body repair shops. You would investigate consumer complaints involving poor-quality repair work, improper inspections, unauthorized work, fraudulent repair, overcharging, improper diagnosis, and other deceptive practices. You would analyze and decipher insurance company vehicle damage estimates, write physical damage reports, and prepare narrative case reports that summarize findings and recommendations for all investigations. You would appraise consumer financial losses and recommend amounts for restitution. You would serve suspension and revocation orders, and civil penalty orders issued by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles against automotive facilities. You would conduct vehicle inspection certification classes for individuals seeking to become certified by the Department of Motor Vehicles. You would gather, label and prepare evidence in complaint cases, and prepare reports of findings using laptop or desktop computers. You would testify at administrative hearings presenting the department’s case both through entering into the record evidence collected during an investigation, as well as, witness and first hand direct testimony. Based on departmental guidelines, you would make recommendations for action against facilities. You may be required to testify at civil proceedings. You would ensure all types of automotive facilities meet their obligations as outlined in Articles 5, 12-A, 16, 20, 17 and 48, of the Vehicle and Traffic Law and Commissioner’s Regulations parts 78, 79, 81, 82 and 104. During investigation of consumer complaints and performing audits you would document deficiencies of all activities regulated by DMV division of Vehicle Safety and Clean Air. You would routinely work with DMV-specific computer software programs and may be required to analyze data from those programs as part of your investigations.
