The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has two main functions: natural resource management and environmental quality protection. DEC's responsibility is to protect, improve, and conserve the State's land, waters, air, fish, and wildlife, and other resources in order to enhance the health, safety, and welfare of the people of the State and their overall economic and social well-being. DEC's nearly 3,800 employees, based in the Central Office in Albany and nine regional offices, are committed to protecting the environment and natural resources, and providing the best service to all DEC customers.
