Summary of Job Description

As an Unemployment Insurance Accounts Examiner, you would apply accounting principles and knowledge of Unemployment Insurance Law to perform or manage the calculation of employers’ unemployment insurance rates and the adjustment of employer accounts. You would apply knowledge of Unemployment Insurance Law to answer questions from employers concerning unemployment insurance liability; calculate employers’ unemployment insurance rates; adjust employers’ accounts; and answer employers’ inquiries concerning the status of accounts and unemployment insurance rates.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations held for this position.  Please note:  New York State employees may qualify for both.  

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Labor and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive, labor class, or 55-b/55-c service as a SG-6 or higher.

In addition to meeting the above qualification, you must have six semester credit hours in accounting or statistics (or a combination). When applying, you must submit a list of qualifying accounting/statistics courses. You must provide the course name, the number of semester credit hours received, and the name of the accredited college/university attended for each course. Failure to do so will result in disapproval of your application.

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, candidates must have:

Either 1. an associate’s degree; OR 60 semester credit hours, either of which must include or be supplemented by six semester credit hours in accounting or statistics (or a combination);

Or 2. four years of office experience which must include one year of specialized experience* AND six semester credit hours in accounting or statistics (or a combination).

*Specialized experience MUST include all of the following activities: the responsibility for the analysis of data relating to customer financial or tax accounts; the application of pertinent rules, regulations, or laws; and contacting customers in order to explain determinations made on their accounts. Experience in the routine processing, completion, transmittal, or review of forms, accounts, or claims is NOT qualifying.
