Summary of Job Description

Principal Statisticians plan, direct, and supervise the development of statistical projects related to specific agency programs. Incumbents use a variety of statistical techniques including sampling and time series analysis; participate in the development of data models or databases or supervise the establishment and ongoing operation of all data systems; develop statistical techniques and methodologies to optimize allocation of resources; respond to the more complicated technical or statistical questions by providing estimates and interpretations of data; inform staff of the technical standards for data; conduct research using statistically sound survey methods and write reports of findings; assure that quality standards are met and that the data are statistically reliable; assure that appropriate statistical methodology is followed; review and approve the release of major statistical reports that analyze and interpret the results for the public; review and apprise staff of technical standards for labor market data; resolve technical economic and statistical problems that influence the release of data to the public; and supervise the development of special analytical reports and working papers on labor statistics and economic issues. Incumbents may supervise lower level staff.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as either:

A. as an Associate Statistician or Associate Biostatistician;

OR

B. as an Associate Economist, Associate Economist (Various Parenthetics), or Econometrician 2;

AND

you must possess 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, economics/econometrics, mathematics, operations research, or research methods;

AND

at least 3 of the 24 semester credit hours must be in statistics or biostatics;

AND

at least 9 of the 24 semester credit hours must be in any combination of: differential or integral calculus, econometrics, biostatistics or statistics.
