Job Duties

Transportation Managers plan and oversee statewide programs administered by the Department of Transportation. Positions manage statewide non-engineering programs such as highway and non-highway (airports, water and ports, rail, transit, bus and truck) modes of transportation; financing of capital projects related to the development and improvement of transportation systems and services; transportation policy development; and real estate, real property and right-of-way management.  Each program operates in a specialized area of expertise in transportation technology, program management, design and implementation of transportation systems, analysis and planning and project development, and includes different laws, rules, regulations and industrial structures which impact the technical difficulty and scope of the work performed. Positions may also be classified to oversee and direct interdisciplinary programs which include both engineering and non-engineering staff.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

The examination used to fill this position is called Promotion Opportunities in Transportation Management.  

For qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, candidates must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had permanent competitive service in a position allocated to G-27/M-2 or higher.
