Summary of Job Description

As a Public Information Specialist 1 (Spanish Language), you would work independently and perform the full range of public information activities for your agency. Such activities may include acting as spokesperson for an agency to the news media and to individuals who inquire regarding the agency’s activities. You may draft, edit and distribute informational material concerning your agency’s activities. You may conduct tours, prepare speeches and presentations, oversee your agency’s website content and social media channels to develop and execute digital campaigns to promote your agency’s public information objectives. You may supervise lower level employees including support, creative, and information technology staff.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service Examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as a:

A. Public Information Specialist, or a Public Information Specialist (Spanish Language);

OR

B. Multimedia Production Technician, Graphic Designer 1, or Photographer 2.


For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have:

1. a bachelor’s degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND two years of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media;

OR

2. a master’s or higher degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND one year of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media;

OR

3. six years of the experience described above.


If you are selected for appointment as a Public Information Specialist 1 (Spanish Language), you will be required to demonstrate proficiency in that language.  Proficiency must be at a level which will permit you to perform the duties of the position satisfactorily.
