Summary of Job Description

As a Youth Communications Aide in the Central Communication Unit, you would report information accurately in a Microsoft Access database, assess and route incident reports called in from agency facilities and field offices, and initiate and cancel warrants and detainers. In addition, you would act as the on-call service for the Office of Children and Family Services executive and operations personnel during off business hours, forwarding necessary information to Community Multi Services, Detention/Voluntary Agencies, the Public Information Office, Executive Office, and other Bureau of Classification and Movement Units, as necessary.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations held for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.  

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and have had three months of permanent competitive, permanent 55-b/55-c, permanent non-competitive, or
permanent labor class service in a position allocated to Grade 6 or higher.

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have a high school diploma or have earned a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) or higher degree, AND have had one year of experience in a communications unit where your primary responsibility was the relay of information related to the transport of individuals in custody, reports of possible illegal activities, or issues of public safety.

Qualifying Experience includes, but is not limited to, dispatching law enforcement personnel, military policy, emergency medical or fire personnel, or personnel involved in incident management.

Non-Qualifying Experience includes, but is not limited to, dispatching related to fleet management (taxis, limousines, car service), roadside assistance, private security guard work, or experience in a customer call center.
