Job Duties

As an Architect 2, your duties may include, but are not limited to the management and coordination of all in-house and consultant design work. You would direct, supervise and mentor a staff of subordinate architects and/or engineers, drafting technicians and project managers in the design and managing of state building projects; oversee the interaction of your staff with in-house or consultant design professionals, technical specialists, cost control, and other units; direct and review the technical content and presentation of architectural designs and construction documents; act as the point of contact with client agencies for technical aspects of in-house and consultant design projects and programs; participate in the procurement/selection of consultant contracts; lead or participate in various International Standards Organization and Quality Improvement Teams; prepare necessary reports and correspondence; and provide expert testimony at litigation proceedings as required. At certain agencies you will also supervise subordinate professional staff in the review and approval of architectural construction documents for capital construction projects relating to public school districts, Boards of Cooperative Education Services, healthcare projects, institutional projects or the building and/or renovating of affordable housing projects to ensure plans meet all applicable codes and regulations. You may also draft or propose regulations and modifications. In other agencies, you may be assigned to coordinate the engineering and architectural design activities by supervising the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of a region's facilities or historic preservation capital projects.

Note: Continued employment as an Architect 2 is dependent upon continued possession of a New York State Professional Architect's license and current registration. Failure to maintain this license with current registration will result in removal from the position.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, ou must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive NY HELPS*, or 55-b/55-c service as Architect 1**, AND you must possess a New York State Architect license and current registration at the time of appointment. If you have received a permanent appointment to a qualifying title listed and served provisionally*** in that title immediately preceding your permanent appointment, such provisional service may be counted towards meeting the time in title required for this examination.

**Due to the May 23, 2024, title structure change, permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Senior Architect is also qualifying.
