Summary of Job Description

As a Canal Maintenance Shop Supervisor 2, you would plan and supervise the work of a large number of journey-level trade workers and assistants in the repair and maintenance of canal mechanical equipment and in the mechanical repair of electrical equipment. You would conduct weekly safety meetings and ensure employees follow established safety practices. You would inspect the equipment, both on shore and on floating plants, to determine necessary repairs and design special jigs and fixtures as required. You would also design and manufacture special canal equipment such as lock gates and valves, trash racks, dam gates, shafts and bearings, and supervise the repair of parts for water turbines, tractors, compressors, cranes, shovels, dredging equipment, etc. You will be responsible for the scheduling of preventative maintenance and repairs to gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, construction equipment, and light marine vessels. Appointees will be responsible for the inventory management controls for a canal section. The appointee must have basic computer skills to operate project and maintenance tracking software programs.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Canal Corporation and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive (including 55-b/55-c), or labor class service as a Canal Maintenance Shop Supervisor 1, Machinist, Trades Specialist (Machinist), Motor Equipment Mechanic, Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Steel Fabricator, Welder or Trades Specialist (Welder).

Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.


For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have five years of experience as a machinist, either performing layout work for machine shop and metal fabrication, or supervising the layout and construction of metal fabrications such as valves, gears, shafts, and bushings involving machine shop practices.

In addition, your experience must have included at least one year as a supervisor performing the full range of supervisory duties over at least three workers involved in trades such as welding, metal fabrication, machinery, etc.
