SENIOR BOILER INSPECTOR: under the direction of the Supervising Boiler Inspector, supervises a staff of Boiler Inspectors in conducting regulatory inspections of high and low pressure boilers; reviews workload and assigns inspections; conducts the most complex inspections; accompanies staff members to inspection sites to assure that inspections are being conducted according to specified procedures; conducts informal conferences with repair firms and owner/operators regarding the issuance of Commissioner’s violations; reviews inspectors’ violations to determine if violations are valid and the intent of the code is met; reviews final form of proposed recommendations and compliance methods; represents the agency at the compliance conferences; prepares cases for use by the Attorney General’s Office by collecting background information and providing expert witness testimony; maintains records on the district’s test equipment and assigns equipment to field staff; trains and evaluates staff; assists mechanical engineers, contractors, installers, and owner/operators in their review of new and existing applicable codes and standards; reports recurring problems which may result in program or inspection policy changes; reviews daily work summaries and determines if all inspections and sites are properly surveyed and applicable orders issued; investigates boiler accidents; prepares any necessary reports; and monitors insurance company inspectors to determine the quality of inspection and follows up as needed.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination to be considered for appointment to this position.
For qualified employees of New York State on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Labor and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Boiler Inspector.
