Summary of Job Description

As a Railroad Inspector (Operating Practice), you would work in a field office of the New York State Department of Transportation administering and enforcing Federal safety and health laws and regulations that apply to the railroad industry. As a Railroad Inspector (Operating Practice), you would be concerned with operating rules and practices, administration of Federal alcohol and drug control programs, hours of service for railroad employees involved with the movement of trains, Federal locomotive engineer certification standards, occupational safety conditions and reporting, and employee training and qualification. In this capacity, you would: investigate serious railroad accidents, visit the accident site, make inspections and tests of situations and objects to determine the operational condition of affected equipment; question employees and witnesses to develop facts; write a narrative report describing the accident and the cause or causes and recommend measures to prevent similar accidents in the future; and examine carrier records to determine if the employee/employer is in compliance with all applicable State and Federal requirements.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have four years of experience in developing or administering railroad operating rules.

Qualifying experience includes: Railroad Dispatcher, Railroad Trainmaster, Railroad Engineer, or Railroad Operations Management.
