Job Duties

The Investigative Specialist title series was created effective June 16, 2016, and consolidated a wide variety of investigative titles.  Please visit Frequently Asked Questions for further information regarding this consolidation and Investigator Title Listing for a list of the titles consolidated.

These positions exist only in the Department of Financial Services.  These positions have Peace Officer status.  As an Investigative Specialist 1(Financial Fraud) you would, under the supervision of higher level staff, carry out investigations related to the administration and enforcement of the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to alleged fraud involving financial entities.   You may perform a wide variety of enforcement, regulatory and licensing investigative activities to gather information and report facts.  You may review assigned cases or complaints from the public to determine the section of law, rule or regulation that applies and to identify the issues and the types of information needed.  You may plan the scope and method of investigation based on office policy, the accessibility of information and the seriousness of the issue.  You may meet with and interview witnesses, complainants, prospective licensees and others to obtain information relating to the investigation or to determine eligibility.  You may take statements and affidavits from individuals in an appropriate format, taking care to include a full description of the facts needed to support the investigation.  You may identify and search public and private documents to locate persons of interest and may question others and follow leads to find such persons.  You may review documents to extract pertinent information; and verify information obtained by checking it with other sources.  You may visit establishments to review records and ensure that they comply with laws and regulations.  You may assist employees, employers and others in understanding their obligations and responsibilities under those laws and regulations.  Reviews documents to extract pertinent information; and verifies information obtained by checking it with other sources.  You may meet and confer with law enforcement and other entities to convey and obtain information relevant to an investigation, and to develop and maintain rapport to ensure mutual cooperation in the conduct of investigations.  You may prepare factual written reports of information gathered during an investigation and may recommend an appropriate course of action consistent with the findings and agency policy and practices.  You may discuss investigative findings and recommendations with supervisor and program specialists.  You may assist with witness preparation, and fact and evidence development during trials or testify at administrative hearings and criminal proceedings regarding the details of investigations and conclusions reached.  You may perform other tasks as assigned.
