Job Duties

As a Canal Section Superintendent, you would direct the work of canal employees in the operation and maintenance of a canal section and instruct them in the methods of performing varied maintenance work. You would perform supervisory activities that include monitoring staff performance, completing performance evaluations, counseling employees and conducting investigations, as necessary, and determining staff assignments. You would investigate accidents, complaints, requests for permits, and violations of canal regulations; participate in the development and supervise the implementation of construction and maintenance programs; approve payrolls, purchase orders, and vouchers; and have overall responsibility for preparing/monitoring the Section budget.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Canal Corporation and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Assistant Canal Equipment Specialist, Canal Electrical Supervisor, Canal Maintenance Shop Supervisor 2, Canal Maintenance Supervisor 2, or Floating Plant Supervisor.
