Accountant Trainee 1
Similar to Grade 14
Similar to Grade 16
Upon successful completion of 12 months as Accountant Trainee 1, you will automatically advance to Accountant Trainee 2.
Note on Traineeships: When current State employees with prior graded State service transition into traineeships, there will be cases where these individuals will be compensated at a higher rate than the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade" of a traineeship. Specifically, in these cases, the starting compensation of a traineeship will be the higher of either: 1) the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade;" or 2) an employee's current graded salary. For those current State employees with no prior graded service who transition into traineeships, these individuals will be compensated at the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade." Overall, because of the various intricacies associated with the State's salary mechanics, the Office of the State Comptroller should be consulted regarding the actual compensation paid to any State employee transiting to a traineeship.
As an Accountant Trainee 1, under the supervision of a higher ranking accountant, fiscal or program officer, you would perform professional accounting or auditing tasks requiring a knowledge of accounting principles and procedures in the development, examination, review, analysis or supervision of financial and accounting records including the preparation of related reports and statements. Within broad administrative policy limitations and following well established and accepted accounting and auditing methods and procedures, accountants design new or revise existing accounting systems. A Senior Accountant may perform both accounting and auditing activities or, depending on the nature of an agency program and the assignment, may specialize in one functional area. Senior Accountants functioning as auditors, will conduct or supervise on-site field audits of the accounts and operations of regulated corporations and others governed by State and local laws and regulations.
Positions in this class are located in many different agencies in the State and are assigned to the main office or to a district or field office.
Trainees will receive a combination of structured training, on-the-job training, and/or practical job performance to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to function at the full performance level.
