Summary of Job Description

As an Education Supervisor (General), you would supervise and evaluate the education staff of either a major part of an extensive education program or an entire smaller education program; plan curricula; approve instructional materials, and supervise preparation and use of daily lesson plans; make classroom supervisory visits, integrate the education program with other activities, and maintain records of student progress; be responsible for the administration of standardized educational assessments; participate in staff meetings; interview new clients in order to secure information relative to educational background and aptitudes; schedule classes; supervise teacher training; and participate on committees. You may also perform other administrative duties as appropriate.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are three examinations held for this position.

For qualified employees of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and the Office of Mental Health:

On or before the date of examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services or the Office of Mental Health and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Teacher 4, Teacher 4 (Spanish Language), or Vocational Instructor 4 (Business and Distributive Education). In addition, you MUST have a current conditional initial, initial/provisional, or permanent/professional School Administrator/Supervisor, School Building Leader, School District Administrator, or School District Leader certificate issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), or current comparable Emergency COVID-19 certificate.

Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.

This examination has special minimum qualifications in addition to the usual "time in service requirement."

If you were permanently appointed to a qualifying title on or before March 10, 2023, and have served continuously in this title since that date, you are eligible to file for this examination.

For qualified employees of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision:

On or before the date of examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Teacher 4, Teacher 4 (Spanish Language), or Vocational Instructor 4 (Business and Distributive Education). In addition, you must have one of the following:

Either 1. completed 12 graduate credit hours in education administration or school leadership in a New York State Education Department (NYSED) approved program;*

OR

2. a current permanent or professional School Administrator/Supervisor, School Building Leader, School District Administrator, or School District Leader certificate issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

*You must submit a list of qualifying courses indicating 12 graduate credit hours in education administration or school leadership from a NYSED approved program. You must provide the course title and course number, the name and address of the college or university, and the number of credit hours received per course. Please include this information in the "coursework" section of the online application, or in the remarks section of the paper application.

Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.

For all other qualified individuals:

On or before the date of examination, you must have a current conditional initial, initial/provisional, or permanent/professional School Administrator/Supervisor, School Building Leader, School District Administrator, or School District Leader certificate issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), or current comparable Emergency COVID-19 certificate.*

*If applying with an Emergency COVID-19 certificate, you should indicate on your exam application the certificate you intend to obtain before the expiration of your COVID-19 certificate.
