Summary of Job Description

As a Principal Engineering Technician, you would perform complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas. These activities might include preparing written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies and equipment, and developing or reviewing contract plans and specifications. You may supervise lower level technicians in such areas as design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing. Additionally, you may plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop test equipment and procedures. You may also be expected to use various computer applications including Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) in the performance of your duties.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, you must have:

Either 1. four years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;

Or 2. an associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology AND two years of experience listed above in number 1;

Or 3. a bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
