Summary of Job Description

A Psychiatrist 2 (Manual Communications), you would serve as a practicing specialist by providing psychiatric services to clients and residents and coordinating other treatment and support services for them; you may plan and oversee psychiatric, medical, and patient care and support services for a treatment program, a group of clients or residents, a treatment facility, or a unit.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have the following:

1. possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State; AND

2. certification in general psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Limited permit option: This option is available only in the Office of Mental Health and Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. If you are licensed in another state or by written examination in Canada, AND meet the other requirements for Psychiatrist 1 or 2, AND have a current limited permit to practice medicine in New York State, you are eligible to compete in the examination. If appointed, you must obtain your license within one year of the date your limited permit was issued. Failure to do so will result in removal from your position.
