Job Duties

As a Direct Support Assistant Trainee (Spanish Language), you would participate in a traineeship ranging from 6 to 15 months depending on your qualifications and your ability to demonstrate competency in certain critical areas of consumer care. The traineeship includes a wide range of learning experiences in the provision of care for individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities. You will be required to successfully complete all mandated trainings.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of filing your application, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and have had one year of permanent competitive, non competitive, labor, or 55-b/55-c service in a position allocated to Grade 3 or higher; AND you must have:

Either 1. graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) or higher;**

Or 2. a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Certificate from an accredited public or private organization.***

All other candidates must have:

Either 1. graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) or higher;**

Or 2. a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Certificate from an accredited public or private organization.***

**You must include the name and location of the high school or governmental authority that granted the diploma in the “Education" Section of your application.

***You must include the name and location of the organization that granted the DSP Certificate in the “Education" Section of your application and you MUST supply a copy of the Certificate with your application.

If you are selected for appointment as a Direct Support Assistant Trainee (Spanish Language), you will be required to demonstrate proficiency in that language. Proficiency must be at a level which will permit you to perform the duties of the position satisfactorily
