Summary of Job Description

As a Medical Technologist 1, you would:

Perform specialized chemical, physical, and microscopic clinical laboratory procedures and tests on human tissue specimens and body fluids in accordance with approved standards and operating procedures.

Prepare specimens and samples for testing; and operate, adjust, monitor, and maintain clinical laboratory instruments and equipment.

Analyze, interpret, and discuss test results and findings with higher-level clinical laboratory staff, healthcare professionals, and/or scientists.  

Document clinical laboratory activities, maintains required records, and prepares statistical reports.  

Implement new or modified clinical laboratory procedures and techniques as directed.  

Perform administrative functions as necessary, such as managing equipment and supply inventories and assisting in the preparation of budget and purchase requests to ensure the proper function of the laboratory.  

May participate in quality assurance activities; assist in the research and development of new clinical laboratory techniques, procedures, and methodologies; prepare and analyze specimens and samples for use in clinical laboratory proficiency testing; and supervise and/or train other clinical laboratory staff in technical procedures.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

Candidates must have:

I.     bachelor's degree in medical technology;

or II.    A minimum of 90 semester hours or equivalent in an accredited college or university AND the successful completion of a course of training of at least 12 months in a school of medical technology approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association;

or III.    bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences AND one year of training and/or experience in medical technology;

or IV.    any combination of academic study and training and/or experience outlined in Section 58 of Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law as referenced in the New York State Codes, Rules, and Regulations (NYCRR).
