Summary of Job Description

A Research Laboratory Technical Assistant, under general direction from medical or scientific personnel in the Health Department’s Division of Laboratories and Research:

Performs experimental technical laboratory work in assigned research projects;  
Operates complex scientific laboratory instruments;
Instructs students, technicians and professional personnel from the Department and from private laboratories throughout the state in the operation of scientific laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized laboratory techniques;
Makes observations on the progress of experiments and records results in a scientific manner;
Reads scientific literature relating to assigned projects;
Provides technical advice and assistance to professional research staff in the preparation of scientific papers and reports for publication;
Maintains basic laboratory records;
Performs minor maintenance of equipment; may supervise subordinate technical laboratory employees.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

This title is non-competitive.  No examination is necessary.  However, you must still meet the Minimum Qualifications of the position.

Candidates must be high school graduates and have eight years of progressively responsible technical scientific experience in a laboratory setting. College education may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two years of the required experience.
