Summary of Job Description

As an Investigator 1, you would independently perform investigative activities to gather information and evidence and prepare written reports of findings. Positions are set up for a statewide program of limited scope but with a broad base of licensees, claimants or participants or for incumbents to carry out discrete investigations as directed by their supervisor. Investigations generally focus on single individuals or entities that are suspected of violating clearly defined rules, regulations or laws. You may also assist in assuring compliance with program requirements.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are three examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for all.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance or the Division of Tax Appeals and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as:

Either A. an Investigative Aide or Investigative Aide (Spanish Language);

Or B. in a position allocated to Grade 9 or higher; OR in a position allocated to Grade 6, 7, or 8 AND have a bachelor's or higher degree.

If you were permanently appointed to a qualifying title on or before January 22, 2023, and have served continuously in this title since that date, you are eligible to file for this examination.

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, you must have:

Either 1. four years of qualifying experience;*

Or 2. an associate's degree in criminal justice, cyber security, law enforcement, police science, criminal justice administration, criminology, criminal investigation, police studies, public justice, forensic accounting, forensic psychology, forensic science, economic crime management, or homeland security AND two years of qualifying experience;*

Or 3. a bachelor's degree or higher in criminal justice, cyber security, law enforcement, police science, criminal justice administration, criminology, criminal investigation, police studies, public justice, forensic accounting, forensic psychology, forensic science, economic crime management, or homeland security.

*Qualifying experience: For the purposes of this examination, experience in a field investigative position conducting interviews of witnesses and others, taking written statements and affidavits, collecting and analyzing physical and documentary evidence, and preparing detailed written reports of investigative findings.
