Summary of Job Description

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Drilling Operations, a Drill Supervisor provides assistance and expertise to regional drill crews; trains regional drill crews in proper and safe drilling techniques; plans and directs drilling projects; maintains a statewide drill tool inventory and processes drill tool requests from regional drill crews; purchases replacement drill supplies; assists in establishing standards for new drilling equipment; inspects and approves drilling equipment used by drilling contractors; and provides technical support to drilling contractors.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have:

Either 1. four years of hands-on experience, two years of which must have been as the primary operator of a drill rig as described below;

Or 2. six years of hands-on experience as described below.

For the purpose of this examination, hands-on experience is described as assisting in the operation of drilling equipment used for acquiring samples of pavement, soil, and rock, and measuring ground water depth, all as part of subsurface explorations for geotechnical engineering purposes.

For the purpose of this examination, the Primary Operator is defined as the member of the drill crew that controls the drill rig during subsurface exploration for geotechnical engineering purposes. This includes control of the vertical movement of the drill head and string, as well as the depth and speed at which drilling occurs, and additional functions specific to the type of drilling being performed. Primary Operators are also responsible for the supervision of the drill rig crew.
