Job Duties

As a Motor Equipment Specialist, you would develop specifications for new and replacement vehicles and equipment, as well as modifications for existing equipment. A Motor Equipment Specialist coordinates requirements and specification information within the Department of Transportation and with other agencies; observes, checks, and evaluates equipment during manufacturing for compliance to specifications; supervises testing of new and prototype equipment and evaluates the results; researches publications and reports for new and developmental equipment; designs modifications to equipment to provide for the safety of personnel and property as well as more efficient operation and maintenance; researches component failure trends; coordinates campaigns for federally regulated and mandated manufacturers recalls for product corrections and modifications, and for voluntary manufacturers recalls for product improvements; resolves warranty issues with manufacturers and service providers including collecting data from multiple sources using data mining skills and organizing that data into readable format; procures equipment according to the Office of General Services Procurement rules, including researching available OGS contract and/or Agency specific contracts and determining how to utilize them; coordinates the mini-bid process, including creating invitations for bids, evaluating submitted proposals, and awarding contracts; and maintains the statewide diagnostic software and computers, including manufacturer updates, enhancements, and training.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass an examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive NY HELPS*, or 55-b/55-c service as shown below. If you have received a permanent appointment to a qualifying title listed and served provisionally** in that title immediately preceding your permanent appointment, such provisional service may be counted towards meeting the time in title required for this examination.

Either A. Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment);***

Or B. Maintenance Supervisor 1 (Motor Equipment).****

***Due to the March 2018 title structure change, permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 2 is also qualifying.
