Summary of Job Description

As a Service and Repair Mechanic (Electronics), you would independently install, test, diagnose, maintain, service, repair, replace, or otherwise work on a variety of electronic systems and equipment. Depending upon the employing agency and your specific assignment, the equipment may include communications devices, computer equipment, security systems, fire alarms, and other control and indicating equipment, various sorts of lights, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and energy management systems. Your work tasks may involve working with ladders, scaffolding, or blueprints, and using hand, power, and diagnostic tools. You may supervise and/or inspect the work of subordinate staff (which may, in a correctional facility, include inmate workers).

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.  

On or before the date of the examination, you must have:

Either 1. four years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment;

Or 2. graduation from a high school technical electronics education program recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting the standards for technical education AND three years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment;

Or 3. an associate degree in electronic technology or successful completion of a two-year technical professional certification program in the electronics field AND two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment.

Examples of electronic equipment includes, but is not limited to, antenna systems, closed circuit television systems, control and indicating equipment, data systems, electronic office equipment, fire alarms, intercommunication units, intrusion and surveillance equipment, public address systems, radio equipment, security systems, and radiological monitoring equipment.
