Summary of Job Description

As Medical Social Worker A, you would provide social casework services to patients in hospitals run by the Department of Health or to students in the School for the Blind. In order to assist patients/students with the social, emotional and environmental problems associated with their medical condition, you would participate in health or educational teams carrying out the social aspects of patient/student rehabilitation plans; help the patient/student and family with their emotions and attitude towards medical care; and establish casework relationships to help patients/students achieve a better adjustment with themselves and with their environment, illness, medical treatment and ultimate rehabilitation. At the New York State Veterans’ Homes, Medical Social Workers plan and implement a social casework program as part of an interdisciplinary care team, to assist and support residents and their families with social, physical and environmental changes. They provide counseling and social services to the residents of the home and their families.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

Candidates must have:

a master's degree in social work; OR
a bachelor's degree in social work AND either 30 graduate credits in social work or one year of social work experience in an acute care/rehabilitation hospital or nursing home; OR
a bachelor's degree in guidance and counseling, rehabilitation counseling, psychology or sociology AND two years of social work experience in an acute care/rehabilitation hospital or nursing home; OR
a master's degree in guidance and counseling, rehabilitation counseling, psychology or sociology AND one year of social work experience in an acute care/rehabilitation hospital or nursing home.
