Summary of Job Description

As a Social Work Assistant 3, under the direction of a Licensed Master Social Worker, you would perform duties similar to those performed by a Social Work Assistant 2. However, you would be responsible for a more complex caseload and exercise a higher degree of independence. You would perform a variety of case management and service coordination activities; interview individuals, their families, and/or others to gather background information, prepare case histories, and determine eligibility for services; advocate on behalf of and assist individuals in identifying and obtaining services; work with interdisciplinary treatment teams and participate in the development and implementation of treatment and service plans; coordinate services between agencies, programs, and providers; and follow-up to ensure individuals' needs are met. You may also supervise lower-level Social Work Assistants and direct care staff.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this title. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, the New York State Office of Mental Health, and Helen Hayes Hospital and have had 45 days of permanent competitive, non-competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as Social Work Assistant 2, Social Work Assistant 2 (Chinese Language), Social Work Assistant 2 (Korean Language), or Social Work Assistant 2 (Spanish Language).

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, you must have:

Either 1. Two years of qualifying social work experience (indicated below) AND a bachelor's degree in either: social work, applied psychology, art therapy, audiology, clinical mental health, clinical mental health counseling, clinical psychology, communication disorders, community and human services, community mental health counseling, counseling, counseling and community psychology, counseling education, creative art therapy, education, experimental psychology, expressive art therapy, forensic mental health, forensic psychology, gerontology, health administration, health and human services, human development, human services, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, music therapy, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, psychoanalysis, recreation therapy, rehabilitation counseling, social welfare, sociology, special education, speech communication, speech/language pathology, or vocational rehabilitation counseling,

Or 2. One year of social work experience (indicated below) AND a master's degree in in either: social work, applied psychology, art therapy, audiology, clinical mental health, clinical mental health counseling, clinical psychology, communication disorders, community and human services, community mental health counseling, counseling, counseling and community psychology, counseling education, creative art therapy, education, experimental psychology, expressive art therapy, forensic mental health, forensic psychology, gerontology, health administration, health and human services, human development, human services, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, music therapy, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, psychoanalysis, recreation therapy, rehabilitation counseling, social welfare, sociology, special education, speech communication, speech/language pathology, or vocational rehabilitation counseling.
