Upon successful completion of 12 months as Teachers Retirement System Invest Officer Tr 2, you will automatically advance to Teachers Retirement System Invest Officer 1.

Note on Traineeships: When current State employees with prior graded State service transition into traineeships, there will be cases where these individuals will be compensated at a higher rate than the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade" of a traineeship. Specifically, in these cases, the starting compensation of a traineeship will be the higher of either: 1) the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade;" or 2) an employee's current graded salary. For those current State employees with no prior graded service who transition into traineeships, these individuals will be compensated at the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade." Overall, because of the various intricacies associated with the State's salary mechanics, the Office of the State Comptroller should be consulted regarding the actual compensation paid to any State employee transiting to a traineeship.

Summary of Job Description

As a Teachers' Retirement System Investment Officer, in general, you would assist higher level staff in the analysis and management of NYSTRS investments through duties such as: (1) assisting with trading domestic stocks and bonds and “due diligence,” selection and monitoring of private equity investments; (2) learning the use of quantitative tools and investment software to maximize the return of internally managed investment portfolios; (3) assisting with credit analysis of fixed income securities and monitoring externally managed portfolios; (4) assisting in preparation of detailed analysis of investment offerings, maintenance/development of statistical data, and preparation of correspondence and documents in connection with purchases and sales of investments.

In Real Estate, duties may include: (1) assisting with analyzing and underwriting large commercial real estate transactions for potential acquisition; (2) assisting in evaluating requests for financing commercial real estate assets across the U.S.; (3) assisting with performing site inspections, conducting market assessments, modeling investment performance, reviewing leases/appraisals/engineering and environmental reports, and conducting other “due diligence” work as necessary; (4) participating in the preparation of the closing legal documents.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.  

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 30 semester credit hours in any one, but no more than two, of the following areas: accounting, economics, finance, investments, mathematics or statistics.
