A Horticultural Inspector 3 coordinates and supervises the field inspection program by formulating and devising standardized inspection methods and procedures; reviewing inspection reports to ensure statewide consistency of inspection and enforcement activities; directing staff to take appropriate regulatory action; making recommendations to improve program effectiveness; planning and coordinating training activities for field staff; directly supervising field staff on special projects and problems, assisting the USDA in implementing regulatory actions; coordinating the consumer complaint program; representing the program to industry and consumer groups; and performing administrative activities in support of program activities.
The level of the titles within this career ladder vary based on the level of supervision, complexity of the duties involved, degree of independent judgment, etc.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.
Promotion: one year of competitive service as a Horticultural Inspector 2, or two years of permanent competitive service as a Horticultural Inspector 1.
Open Competitive: Bachelors degree in plant science, horticulture, agriculture, environmental or natural science and five years of experience providing program management and supervision of an agricultural, horticultural or forestry resources program initiative, function or special project.
