Job Duties

As an Environmental Radiation Specialist, in general, you would perform pathway analysis and dose assessments for proposed and existing discharges of radioactive material; review environmental reports for radiological impacts and prepare recommendations; review and revise regulations to conform to federal and state laws and regulations governing radioactive discharges and disposal; perform field investigations, including radiation surveys and sample collections and analysis and participate in public hearings and meetings on radiological facilities. In addition, you would evaluate proposed discharges and disposal of radioactive waste, and plan, conduct and coordinate technical investigations of radiological health and environmental hazards.

The level of the titles within this career ladder vary based on the level of supervision, complexity of the duties involved, degree of independent judgment, etc.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

For qualified employees of New York State on or before the date of filing application, candidates must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Environmental Radiation Specialist 2.
