Summary of Job Description

As a Traffic Supervisor, you would plan, direct, review, and evaluate all activities relating to the administration of a Traffic Management Program within a Thruway division. In addition, you would supervise Division Traffic Personnel, prepare the division program budget and, if necessary, perform the duties of the Assistant Traffic Supervisor.

Important: The duties of this position will require working in adverse weather conditions and may require some physical exertion. Traffic Supervisors will be required to serve as a Division Duty Officer and be available for 24-hour callouts or overtime as deemed necessary. Travel, potentially outside of Division limits, and shift work may be required.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Thruway Authority and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Assistant Traffic Supervisor.

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must have at least six years of experience in one or any combination of the following:

Investigating on-scene motor vehicle accidents, preparing motor vehicle accident reports in a position with responsibility for either safety control or vehicular traffic.

Active role in Incident Management working with multijurisdictional agencies.

Responsibility in traffic control review and compliance within a multilane divided highway.

Note: Experience investigating insurance claims or police experience in which traffic control is a minor function, such as issuing parking tickets, or traffic control at a fixed point such as a street intersection, is NOT considered qualifying.

Substitution: An associate’s degree or higher can be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.
