All salary grades for trainees titles are non-statutory (NS) equated to the salary grade identified. These grade equations apply to the starting salaries in their respective salary schedule for the traineeship levels.

An individual's final salary is determined by the Office of the State Comptroller. This salary schedule does not reflect any Special Salary Treatments
As an Associate Economist, you would apply economic theories to the collection and analysis of economic information and data, and prepare interpretative reports. You would plan, review, and evaluate the work of Senior Economists and other staff; independently prepare major reports for publication; and conduct technical research of exceptional difficulty. You would direct the preparation of materials for publication, and may be called to testify before a regulatory hearing or a legal proceeding and may be subject to cross-examination.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.
For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination you must be a qualified employee of the New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:
Either A. as Senior Economist, Senior Economist (Environmental Impact), Senior Economist (Labor Research), Senior Economist (Milk Marketing), Econometrician 1, Economist Trainee 1, Economist Trainee 1 (Environmental Impact), Economist Trainee 1 (Labor Research), Economist Trainee 2, Economist Trainee 2 (Environmental Impact), or Economist Trainee 2 (Labor Research).
Or B. Senior Statistician.
For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, you must meet BOTH the A and B requirements as follows:
A. Either 1. a bachelor's degree or higher in economics;
OR
2. a bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in economics and an additional six semester credit hours from among the following course work areas: computer science, economics, econometrics, mathematics, operations research, research methods, or statistics;**
AND
B. three years of professional experience conducting economic research. Acceptable experience may include, but is not limited to, experience with substantial responsibility for compiling and interpreting statistical data related to labor, health, regulatory economics, environmental economics, agricultural economics, occupational safety, transportation, insurance, banking, housing, or education. Experience primarily involving the clerical accumulation and manipulation of statistics will NOT be regarded as qualifying for this examination.
Education Substitution: A master's degree in economics or 30 graduate semester credit hours in economics or econometrics may be substituted for two years of the professional experience in conducting economic research described above. A doctoral degree in economics may be substituted for three years of the professional experience in conducting economic research described above.
