Career Ladder

A listing of titles that are most commonly used as steps for upward mobility for this title series. The salary schedule for this career ladder is also available.

  1. Nursing Station Clerk Trainee

    Similar to Grade 06

  2. Nursing Station Clerk 1

    Grade 07

Upon successful completion of 6 months as Nursing Station Clerk Trainee, you will automatically advance to Nursing Station Clerk 1.

Note on Traineeships: When current State employees with prior graded State service transition into traineeships, there will be cases where these individuals will be compensated at a higher rate than the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade" of a traineeship. Specifically, in these cases, the starting compensation of a traineeship will be the higher of either: 1) the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade;" or 2) an employee's current graded salary. For those current State employees with no prior graded service who transition into traineeships, these individuals will be compensated at the hiring rate of the "equated salary grade." Overall, because of the various intricacies associated with the State's salary mechanics, the Office of the State Comptroller should be consulted regarding the actual compensation paid to any State employee transiting to a traineeship.

Summary of Job Description

Nursing Station Clerk Trainees are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. In this capacity, you would screen communications by providing relevant information to appropriate personnel, give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations. You would also process physicians’ orders by recording written orders in charts, Kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. In addition, you would make emergency calls, receive new admissions, prepare and maintain patient charges, maintain a daily log and clinic log, and perform miscellaneous clerical duties as required. You might also be required to pick up and deliver supplies and records for your unit, and may arrange ancillary appointments and patient transport. Nursing Station Clerk Trainees are generally required to work holidays; weekends; and day, evening, and night shifts on a rotating basis.

As a Nursing Station Clerk Trainee, you will serve a six-month probationary traineeship during which your job performance and progression will be evaluated. After an initial eight-week period and prior to the completion of the six-month probationary period, a Nursing Station Clerk Trainee not meeting required standards will be terminated. If you satisfactorily complete the traineeship, you will be advanced to the full title of Nursing Station Clerk 1, G-7, without further examination.
