Summary of Job Description

Developmental Specialists are certified teachers who specialize in teaching children with developmental disabilities.  They are the primary contributors to the individual education program (IEP) and are members of the program planning team responsible for developing the individual program plan (IPP) used to assist individuals with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities in developing basic learning and self-help skills, as well as communication and prevocational skills.  Incumbents help consumers reach their optimal level of functioning by conducting initial evaluations of each individualís strengths, setting performance goals and directly implementing the IEP and IPP.

The levels of the titles within this career ladder vary based on the level of supervision, complexity of the duties involved, degree of independent judgment, etc.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.  
On or before the date of the examination, you must have provisional New York State certification* in special education or provisional New York State certification* in N-6 extended to teach the mentally retarded.
*Possession of a certificate issued by the Cities of Buffalo or New York may be considered comparable to the teaching certificate issued by New York State if used within the appropriate jurisdiction.
