Job Duties

As a Chief Sanitarian, you would direct environmental health programs and supervise lower-level Sanitarians and other staff engaged in establishing and enforcing the provisions of the Public Health Law, and other codes, rules, and regulations related to environmental health, sanitation, and safety. You would develop program priorities, policies, and procedures; oversee environmental health contracts with local health departments; evaluate program effectiveness; and provide consultation to local health departments and other groups.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.
  
On or before the date of examination, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Health and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a:

Principal Sanitarian.
