Summary of Job Description

Environmental Health Program Managers lead technical and scientific programs engaged in preventative health activities, including but not limited to public water supply protection, radiation safety, food protection and community sanitation, environmental health risk assessment, occupational health, risk communication, and hazardous site remediation. Incumbents receive general administrative oversight, but serve as experts in their particular field, and exercise independence within their respective program areas.

Environmental Health Program Managers 1 and 2 typically oversee environmental health programs in district or regional settings.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidtate must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies, geochemistry, geology, health science, industrial hygiene, natural science, physical science, or public health AND:

four years of professional work experience with primary responsibility for investigating, assessing, or controlling the human health impacts of environmental or occupational exposures to chemical, biological or radiological agents, or physical hazards. Two years of this experience must have included technical leadership* and supervision or oversight of technical/professional staff in a public health governmental agency.

Substitution: a master’s degree in a field listed above may be substituted for one year of the required general experience; a Ph.D. in a field listed above may be substituted for two years of the required general experience.

*Technical leadership must have included responsibility for scientific/technical development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of program operations, staffing and staff development, program planning, and policy development and analysis.
