Job Duties

PUBLIC HEALTH DENTIST (LOCAL MEDICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) under the general supervision of the Regional Public Health Dentist:


  • Administers and supervises the dental aspects of the medical assistance for needy persons programs in unorganized counties or counties which have not contracted with the State Health Department for administering and supervising the local medical assistance program for needy persons;

  • Supervises dental clinicians employed in dental clinic programs in local health departments under his/her jurisdiction;
  •   
  • Approves dental services requiring written prior approval;

  • Consults with and advises local health officials and social service officials or their staffs on all aspects of dental care under the Medical Assistance Program;

  • Reviews and determines fees for dental services not included in the fee schedule;
  • Controls quality of dental care by checking records and where necessary examining patients for whom services are requested or who have received dental care under the Medical Assistance Program;

  • Consults with local dental advisory committees regarding any aspects of the local dental program

  • Attends conferences called by the Regional Public Health Dentist or the Director of Dental Health regarding local dental health programs.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

This title is non-competitive.  No examination is necessary.  However, you must still meet the Minimum Qualifications of the position.

Candidates must have a license to practice dentistry in New York State and four years of experience in the practice of dentistry.
