Job Duties
REGIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH DENTIST, under general direction from the Assistant Director of Dental Health:
- Assists regional and local health officers in planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating local dental health programs;
- Serves as dental consultant to the regional health director and to local medical and dental directors of the medical assistance for needy persons programs, and assists them in the administration and supervision of the dental aspects of that program;
- Conducts surveys of local public health districts to determine needs and resources, and assists in establishing priorities when resources are inadequate to meet needs;
- Works with local dental societies to establish minimum professional standards for dental care;
- Conducts periodic inspections of dental care programs to help maintain high quality care where no local dental supervision is available;
- Assists in developing and implementing programs of dental health care eligible for Federal grant in aid assistance;
- Cooperates with department public health education specialists to stimulate new dental health programs designed to meet various local dental health needs;
- Arranges for the prescreening of children for eligibility for participation in State aided programs of dental rehabilitation;
- Supervises regional orthodontic screening centers in his/her region;
- Promotes programs of water fluoridation by providing educational assistance to local health departments and dental societies;
- Serves as resource expert to local fluoridation committees.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

This title is non-competitive. No examination is necessary. However, you must still meet the Minimum Qualifications of the position.
License to practice dentistry in the United States or Canada and either one year of graduate study leading to a Master’s Degree in public health and two years of clinical or public health dental practice, or four years of full-time clinical, supervisory, administrative teaching or program consulting experience in a public health, general dental care or comparable program acceptable by any valid dental specialty board.
