Job Duties

As a Medical Laboratory Technician 1, under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist or Pathologist, you would perform a variety of routine technical laboratory procedures in clinical laboratories or in specimen processing stations. Depending upon your specific assignment, your duties might include, but are not necessarily limited to, such functions as performing complete routine chemical, physical, and microscopic examinations: urinalyses; phlebotomies, blood counts, hemoglobin determinations, and other routine hematology tests; determination of blood sugar, creatinine and urea, and performing other tests in clinical chemistry; immunologic testing; gastric analyses and standard bacteriological examinations; preparing media, cultures, reagents, stains, and solutions; assisting in autopsy procedures; keeping manual and/or computer records; and assisting in research.

As a Medical Laboratory Technician 2, you would perform more difficult laboratory procedures requiring the use of a wide variety of equipment. You would provide data to physicians and might supervise a group of lower-level staff in non-technical areas. You might also be required to perform phlebotomies.
