Summary of Job Description

As a Medical Laboratory Technician 1, under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist or Pathologist, you would perform a variety of routine technical laboratory procedures in clinical laboratories or in specimen processing stations. Depending upon your specific assignment, your duties might include, but are not necessarily limited to, such functions as performing complete routine chemical, physical, and microscopic examinations: urinalyses, phlebotomies, blood counts, hemoglobin determinations, and other routine hematology tests; determination of blood sugar, creatinine and urea, and performing other tests in clinical chemistry; immunologic testing; gastric analyses and standard bacteriological examinations; preparing media, cultures, reagents, stains, and solutions; assisting in autopsy procedures; keeping manual and/or computer records; and assisting in research.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations held for this position.

For qualified employees of New York State on or before the date of filing application, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months permanent competitive or non-competitive service as a Laboratory Worker, Senior Laboratory Worker, Laboratory Animal Caretaker, Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker, Laboratory Aide, Laboratory Caretaker, or Phlebotomist.

In addition, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Either 1. High school graduation or the equivalent AND completion of a satisfactory combination of education and experience in an acceptable laboratory. This combination may include completion of a vocational-technical program and two years of medical laboratory experience; completion of a structured medical laboratory technology program and one year of experience; three years of experience; or completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of 50 weeks' duration and one year of experience;
Or 2. an associate's degree as a medical laboratory technician;
Or 3. completion of at least 45 semester credit hours of college coursework AND a six-month medical laboratory technology training course;
Or 4. an associate's degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences; AND six months of satisfactory experience in medical laboratory work;
Or 5. completion of at least 45 semester credit hours of college coursework including six hours in general chemistry, six hours in inorganic chemistry, 12 hours in biology, three hours in mathematics; AND six months of satisfactory experience in medical laboratory work.

For all other qualified individuals candidates must have:

Either 1. an associate's degree as a medical laboratory technician;
Or 2. completion of at least 45 semester credit hours of college coursework AND a six-month medical laboratory technology training course;
Or 3. an associate's degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences AND six months of satisfactory experience in medical laboratory work;
Or 4. completion of at least 45 semester credit hours of college coursework including six hours in general chemistry, six hours in inorganic chemistry, 12 hours in biology, and three hours in mathematics AND six months of satisfactory experience in medical laboratory work;
Or 5. high school graduation or the equivalent AND completion of a satisfactory combination of education and experience in an acceptable laboratory. This combination may include completion of a vocational-technical program and two years of medical laboratory experience; completion of a structured medical laboratory technology program and one year of experience; three years of experience; or completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of 50 weeks' duration; and one year of experience.
