Job Duties

As a Supervising Attorney, you would supervise and manage the work of attorneys and other staff in an agency's legal office and provide expert legal advice to management. Duties may include, but not be limited to: reviewing and approving completed work; preparing proposed legislation, advising legislators and their staff about preparing legislation, preparing supporting memoranda, and evaluating bills introduced in the legislature for the impact on agency operations and programs; reviewing and approving rules and regulations; providing counsel and advice to management staff about complex legal matters and the interpretation and implementation of State and federal legislation and court decisions; supervising and reviewing the preparation of and approval of a wide variety of legal documents; developing, implementing and directing the training of staff; reviewing and monitoring hearings; evaluating and approving legal interpretations, advisory opinions, forms, policy memoranda, and other documents prepared by staff; drafting and revising the most complex, sensitive, or novel legislation, regulations, legal interpretation, advisory opinions, and other documents; developing and approving legal strategies for sensitive cases and matters; communicating and negotiating with attorneys about claims, complaints, lawsuits, contracts, and other legal matters; representing the agency in legal proceedings or with the Office of the Attorney General; preparing legal actions to enforce laws, rules, regulations, and rulings; and supervising and training professional, paralegal, and support staff assigned to the agency's legal office.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as an Associate Attorney or Associate Attorney (Various Parenthetics).
