Summary of Job Description

As a Canal Maintenance Supervisor 2, you would be responsible for the maintenance of canals and canal structures in an assigned section and supervising a number of labor crews in maintaining and repairing locks, canals, bridges, reservoirs, gates, valves, feeder lines, and canal channels. You would also investigate complaints, accidents, and boat collisions; prepare estimates of labor and materials; keep time, material, and progress records; provide immediate supervision to major repair projects; and inspect smaller repair projects.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State Canal Corporation and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive including 55-b/55-c, or labor class service as a Canal Maintenance Supervisor 1, Carpenter, Chief Lock Operator, Crane and Shovel Operator, Electrician, Machinist, Mason and Plasterer, Motor Equipment Mechanic, Plumber and Steamfitter, Steel Fabricator, or Welder.


For all other qualified individuals, the candidate must have had five years experience in engineering, constructing, or maintaining canal structures such as dams, bridges, canal locks, and canal walls. One year of the required experience must have been in a supervisory position.
