Summary of Job Description

Statisticians apply statistical theory and principles to the planning, execution, control, and analysis of statistical studies, and in providing technical assistance and advice in the application of statistical methods. You would assist in providing management with descriptive summaries and evaluations of numerical data developed through the application of statistical theory.  These activities are usually concerned with a specific program area or subject matter field and are initiated in response to program needs or reporting activities.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position. There are two examinations held for this position.

There are three examinations used to fill this tilte.

For all qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or non-competitive service as follows:

Either A. as a Statistician or Biostatistician;

Or B. as an Assistant Actuary, Economist, Economist (Various Parenthetics), Principal Actuarial Clerk, Principal Statistics Clerk, or Office Assistant 3 (Calculations), AND you must possess 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, economics/econometrics, research methods or mathematics, 6 of which must be in statistics or biostatistics.

For all other qualified individuals, candidates must have:

Either 1. a bachelorís degree or higher in statistics;

Or 2. **a bachelorís degree or higher including or supplemented by 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, economics/econometrics, research methods or mathematics, 6 of which must be statistics or biostatistics.

AND

Two years of professional statistical research experience.

The Professional Careers Opportunities (PCO) examination is also used to fill this title.
