Summary of Job Description

As an Associate Statistician, you would perform statistical work of considerable difficulty and responsibility. You may be expected to utilize various computer programs or work with large databases. You would supervise a staff in the analysis and presentation of statistical data; prepare statistical manuals and handbooks; and plan, organize, and direct subordinates in coding, tabulating, and preparing statistical data for publication. You would also develop statistical methods and evaluate research methods. You would direct varied and complex statistical programs in State agencies. You would consult with staff members, review and evaluate statistical reports, plan and direct the collection of data, supervise subordinates, and do related work as required.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

Please note: qualifications for this position may be subject to change. If substitutions for education and/or experience are allowed, this information would be available on the announcement.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position. There are two examinations held for this position.

For all qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or non-competitive service as follows:

Either A. as a Senior Statistician or Senior Biostatistician;

Or B. as an Econometrician 1, Head Actuarial Clerk, Head Statistics Clerk, Program Research Specialist 2, Program Research Specialist 2 (Various Parenthetics), Research Scientist 1 or Research Scientist 2, Senior Actuary Casualty, Senior Actuary Life, Senior Economist, Senior Economist (Various Parenthetics), AND you must possess 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, economics/econometrics, research methods or mathematics, 6 of which must be in statistics or biostatistics.

For all other qualified individuals, candidates must have:

A) Either 1. a bachelor’s degree or higher in statistics;

Or 2. **a bachelor’s degree or higher including or supplemented by 24 semester credit hours in statistics, biostatistics, economics/econometrics, research methods or mathematics, 6 of which must be statistics or biostatistics.

AND

Three years of professional statistical research experience.
