As an Administrative Assistant 1 (Spanish Language), you would ensure the efficient operation of an office by performing a wide range of administrative tasks related to correspondence, files, and calendar management; work coordination; customer service; fielding of questions; information gathering; and compilation of reports. These positions are found in virtually all State agencies.

For all qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Data Entry Machine Operator, Data Entry Machine Operator (Spanish Language), Keyboard Specialist 1, Keyboard Specialist 1 (Spanish Language), Keyboard Specialist 2, Keyboard Specialist 2 (Spanish Language), Law Department Document Specialist, Law Department Document Specialist Trainee 1, Law Department Document Specialist Trainee 2, Office Assistant 1 Keyboarding, Office Assistant 1 Keyboarding (Chinese Language), Office Assistant 1 Keyboarding (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 Keyboarding, Office Assistant 2 Keyboarding (Spanish Language), or Senior Data Entry Machine Operator.
Coursework Requirements: Prior to appointment, candidates must complete the below coursework requirements.
Mandatory Coursework: Candidates must complete the following core courses: Microsoft Word Basics; Customer Service; Organized Office Worker; and Successful Business Writing.
Elective Coursework: In addition to the mandatory courses, candidates must also complete an additional 4 elective courses in the following competencies: Professionalism & Self-Management, Verbal & Written Communication, Interpersonal & Customer Relations, and Computer Skills & Technology. Agencies will determine acceptable elective coursework for the position being filled.
The duties of an Administrative Assistant 1 (Spanish Language) are the same as an Administrative Assistant 1, with the exception that the individual serving in the position may need to communicate at times with Spanish speaking clients.
