Summary of Job Description

As a Mapping Technologist 2, you would supervise or manage the compilation of more complex mapping projects, digital terrain models (DTM), and orthoimagery, using digital photogrammetric workstations; perform quality control and quality assurance activities for photogrammetric and LiDAR mapping and registration, DTM data and orthoimagery compiled by in-house staff and contract vendors; edit contract vendor mapping and DTM accuracy analysis, and vendor DTM processing and development of production procedures; archive project files; develop quality assurance and quality control procedures and liaison with survey and engineering staff; perform aerotriangulation and LiDAR registration functions, including control layout, selection and aerotriangulation point measurement; monitor projects based error analysis of aerotriangulation and LiDAR data; support the acquisition of aerial photography, LiDAR and sterocompilation services, in coordination with design staff; publish technical requirements and specifications; and coordinate bid/purchase documents. Also, you may be responsible for the training of technicians and the development of training documents.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

Please note: qualifications for this position may be subject to change. If substitutions for education and/or experience are allowed, this information would be available on the announcement.

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations held for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, the candidate must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:

Mapping Technologist 1 or Mapping Technician 3

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, candidates must have:

bachelor’s degree and specialized college coursework as described above;* AND

two years of professional experience making recommendations and decisions relating to the selection, planning, and production of mapping projects and independent research and evaluation activities which require the knowledge and application of the technical principles and practices of GIS and/or photogrammetry.**

*You must include, with your application, a transcript or a list of qualifying courses showing the name of the course, the number of semester credit hours, dates of completion, the college or university attended, and whether the course is at the graduate or undergraduate level.

**Experience limited to Computer Aided Design (CAD) use or GIS user production of thematic overlays to such base maps or to generate system-produced GIS maps will NOT be considered as appropriate experience.

Substitution: A master’s degree in cartography, photogrammetry, surveying, or GIS, that includes at least 12 graduate credits in cartography, LiDAR, and/or photogrammetry, can be substituted for the educational requirement and for up to one year of the required experience.
