HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKERS 2: member of work crew; operates heavier and more complex self-propelled equipment in Category 2 and higher categories; may receive training on truck-mounted or track-mounted cranes or other equipment typically assigned to Crane and Shovel Operators and, once certified, may operate Category 3 equipment; provides on-the-job training to other maintenance workers in the operation of highway construction and maintenance equipment; may serve as lead worker for a highway maintenance crew or a part of the crew; performs laboring tasks and operates Category 1 equipment.

This title is non-competitive. No examination is necessary. However, you must still meet the Minimum Qualifications of the position.
Candidates must have Satisfactory completion of the two-year Highway Maintenance Worker traineeship or two years of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and manual transmission and:
Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements.
NYS DOT certification to operate two of the following pieces of Category 1 equipment: patch roller, sewer cleaner, wood chipper, tractor-mounted mower or forklift; and the following five types of Category 2 equipment: heavy dump truck, snowplow with wing (OPP certification) and front-end loader.
Candidates must also have one year of satisfactory experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1, and NYS DOT certification to operate an additional two types of Category 3 equipment.
An examination is not used to fill this title. You must meet the minimum qualifications of the title in order to be considered for this position. You must apply directly to the agency or agencies that have this title.
